Simulation-based training for Managers and Executives

The advantages of simulation-assisted training

A simulation-assisted training course enables managers to:

  • Experience the flow of events through time. A dynamic strategy simulation illustrates dynamically the way in which the fortunes of a company, its buyers, suppliers, intermediaries, opinion-leaders and users play out over time as a result of a customised strategy that course participants devise.
  • Perceive the consequences of their actions in simulated reality. A dynamic strategy simulation is highly intuitive and fits management-education processes particularly well. It indicates the progress the company’s resources through stages of the strategic plan, and the resulting behaviour of associated resources, such as the use of cash from the project budget, the use of available staff of different skills and external related resources.
  • Test out alternative strategies in the safety of the classroom. By experimenting with a simulated version of the reality that they face in the market, participants learn from their mistakes and develop a more robust understanding of the effects of their policies without risking shareholders’ capital in the real world. Moreover, a true simulation-assisted training course is much more powerful than a course employing ‘microworld’ simulations (generic industry-related simulations not based around the company’s actual situation) as it is directly relevant to participants’ immediate situation. This significantly increases the practical capabilities of the managers who attend the programme.

A typical Powersim simulation-based training programme

trainingTypical simulation-based training programmes consist of up to five multidisciplinary client management teams, simultaneously experimenting and learning through a well-prepared and expertly facilitated process. The simulation-based training process usually comprises four steps.

These are:

  1. Team brief from information pack
  2. Development of team strategy
  3. Simulation of strategy
  4. Conclusions and learning
